Arrival at Amalía House

The entrance is marked by a natural stone wall featuring alternating dark slate slabs and light-coloured sandstone blocks. Attached to it are a blue house number sign bearing the number 87 and a transparent acrylic sign bearing the words ‘Amalía House’ in blue lettering. The interplay of grey slate, warm sandstone and blue gives a first impression of the house’s style right from the street, a style that continues into the garden and onto the terrace.

Garden with medlar and citrus trees

Behind the wall lies a garden where medlar and citrus trees grow. Red flowers bloom amongst the trunks, and paths made of irregularly shaped natural stone slabs connect the different areas. A white wall forms a light-coloured backdrop against which the green of the leaves and the red of the blossoms stand out vividly. On the right-hand side of the garden, a white spiral staircase winds its way upwards; a sunshade is stretched over it, providing shade on hot days.

Terrace with a sea view

From a terrace with metal railings and a stone-slab floor, the view opens out onto the sea. Below lie red rocks and a small sandy beach, with hills stretching to the horizon behind them. In the evening, when the sun is low, the rocks and water take on a warm hue, and the light slowly sweeps across the hills. A spot for a morning coffee or a glass of wine at sunset.

Rooms and furnishings

The 70 m² space can accommodate up to five guests. The photos from the renovation show white-plastered rooms with large windows through which plenty of daylight streams in. In one room, wooden shelving is being installed beneath a white double window overlooking the surrounding residential buildings. Light grey hexagonal tiles featuring dark grey lily motifs are planned for the floors; these will be laid diagonally, reminiscent of traditional cement tiles.

The décor includes a light oak armchair with wide armrests and orange fabric upholstery, the warm colour of which contrasts with the white walls.

Beaches in the area

The coastline around Athens offers a variety of bathing spots. There are light sandy beaches with clear water that transitions from a shallow turquoise to a deep blue, whilst low-lying islands and coastal strips can be seen on the horizon. Elsewhere, there are pebble beaches dotted with the occasional straw parasol, with wooded hills stretching right down to the water’s edge. In the evening, when the sun is low over the sea, the rocks on the shore glow.

Location in Athens

The house is situated in Athens, the Greek capital, home to the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the old town of Plaka with its narrow streets and tavernas. The National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum display artefacts dating back several millennia. To the south of the city lies the coastline of the Saronic Gulf, with seaside resorts such as Glyfada and Vouliagmeni. Ferries depart from the port of Piraeus for the islands, such as Aegina or Hydra; from the deck, the view stretches across the hills and the sea.
